Mars' alignment with Earth early Wednesday is expected to bring
earthlings out into the night to marvel at the glowing reddish point in
the sky, for now the brightest object except the moon. Mars will make its
closest pass to Earth in 60,000 years but it won't be that close -- the
two planets will still be 34.6 million miles apart. Still, that's five
times as close as they were six months ago.
